Aegis looks to take Indian startup products overseas

January 05, 2017 | The Economic Times

BENGALURU: Aegis is creating a digital unit and is looking at combining its inhouse social media product with products from startups for its overseas customers, as the BPO firm looks to boost revenue from higher margin services.

Aegis has already tied up with startup Litmus Marketing, which runs customer surveys, and a startup in the analytics space. Aegis CEO Sandip Sen said the company was looking to tie-up with more startups in 2017.

“We have set up a unit called Aegis Digital that will focus on offerings around social media, internet of things, mobile-based service and analytics. We are already combining offerings and have sold our social media client combined with Litmus in markets like Australia,” Sen told ET.

Sen added that the company expects to sell a similar offering to its Malaysian clients in the next few weeks. Aegis works with companies like General Motors in Australia.

He added that though digital revenue was still a small part of Aegis’ topline, it was growing swiftly.

“We want to take the offering to other clients because Litmus is selling in India. This is what we want to bring to the startups we partner with – access to markets that they may not get on their own, it’s not always about capital,” the company’s chief executive officer said.

BPO companies have become increasingly open to investing in startups – Hinduja Global Solutions BSE 0.51 % has created a venture capital fund and FirstSource BSE 1.80 % has made investments in a data analytics startup.

The sector, which is targetting nearly doubling its revenue to $50 billion by 2020, has been focussing to develop more services around social media and analytics to improve profitability. Aegis is also targetting growing its business in the Middle East.

The company currently receives about $120 million in revenue from the Middle East region, mainly from joint ventures in Saudi Arabia.

“We are looking at business from other Middle Eastern countries like Oman. We think we will be able to grow that further next year,” Sen said.
